Tarte by Cheryl Koh: Premium Korean Strawberry Afternoon Tea Worth The Hype?

By Ashley Wong Kai Ning

It’s April, and you know what that means… it’s strawberry season! What better way to experience it than through high tea? Tarte by Cheryl Koh recently launched their Premium Korean Strawberry Afternoon Tea Set ($60++ per person), available from now till 25 April.

I went down with my family to see if this multi-tiered strawberry galore is worth its hefty price tag.

Space and Ambience

Tarte has a light, Scandinavian theme with its orange accents and grey walls. One thing to note is that the sofa chairs are quite hard to sit on due to their giant size.

Food

The afternoon tea set is split into 3 sections: savoury, bakes, and sweets. We were recommended to start from the bottom up.

Savoury Tarts & Tea Sandwiches

Starting off with the bottom tier, we have the Scottish smoked salmon in a brioche bun, Egg mimosa croissant sandwich, Mushroom tartlet, and Bacon and Gruyère Quiche.

What stood out to me:

The Scottish smoked salmon in a brioche bun is generous with its thick slices of salmon. The brioche bun is soft and shares a similar taste to a croissant.

However, the Bacon and Gruyère Quiche’s flavours are quite bland, with the egg not possessing much firmness.

Bakery

Strawberry Croissant and Jukhyang Strawberry Danish Pastry

What stood out to me:

The Jukhyang Strawberry Danish Pastry has a caramelised layer that complements the light and crispy pastry well. However, the Jukhyang strawberry is sour.

Fresh whole Jukhyang strawberries Chocolate ganache dip and lemon curd are served alongside the pastries.

The Jukhyang strawberries were sugary sweet. I personally prefer dipping it into the lemon curd as the tartness from the lemon makes for a good contrast with the sweet berries.

French Pastries, Tartlets & Desserts

The second tier houses the Jukhyang strawberry tiramisu, Fresh Jukhyang strawberries with rosé jelly and coulis, and Merryqueen Strawberry and Lemon Cake.

What stood out to me:

The Jukhyang strawberry tiramisu has fresh strawberry puree and creamy custard that melts in your mouth.

However, the alcohol in the Fresh Jukhyang strawberries with rosé jelly and coulis overpowers the dish, leaving the strawberries very sour.

The top tier consisted of Merryqueen strawberry tartlets with Tahiti vanilla cream and Dark chocolate choux puffs.

What stood out to me:

The dark chocolate choux puffs have chocolate crumbs on the outside are crunchy. The rich chocolate cream inside the puffs is smooth and delicious.

Final Thoughts

The Premium Korean Strawberry Afternoon Tea set has some notable food pieces that are unique, sweet and creamy. However, I was disappointed at the lack of variety for a high tea set as most of the food are pastries/croissants. Surprisingly, the only sweet strawberries in this strawberry tea set are the whole Jukhyang strawberries, chocolate ganache dip, and lemon curd dish. The rest are quite sour.

My verdict is that the Premium Korean Strawberry Afternoon Tea is not worth $60 per pax due to its lack of variety. It’s commendable that the pastries are excellently baked to be light, crispy and buttery in taste.

If you’re a pastry lover, I would recommend buying Tarte’s individual pastries instead.

Overall, I would give Tarte by Cheryl Koh’s afternoon tea set the following rating:

Food: 2.5/5
Space and ambience: 3/5
Service: 4/5
