Roji Monster Ice Cream: New Cute Taiwanese Dessert shop in SG

As Singapore’s humid weather continues to beat down on us all year long, what better way to combat this monstrous heat with a googly-eyed monster of our own?

Roji Monster, a world-renowned shaved ice store from Taiwan, recently opened its first Singapore outlet in Tanjong Pagar this month.

Order Process

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted with numerous pictures of toppings on the wall.

There are four cardholders on the wall, representing the different shaved ice flavours you can choose from (Milk, Uji Matcha, Black Sesame and Belgian Chocolate). Take the flavour card of your choice and proceed to select your toppings.

You can choose to customise your shaved ice cream with two complementary toppings (extra toppings: $2.90 each) by chopping your card with a topping stamp before heading to the cashier for payment.

I find it quite fun to go through this ordering process, albeit it being a little time consuming and inefficient if it’s crowded.

Space and Ambience

Roji Monster’s interior is minimalistic with its wooden chairs and tables and white walls, giving off a zen feeling. You can also spot monsters lurking in every corner of the store: from monster lanterns to a couple of monster statues sitting on the wooden tables.

Shaved Ice

The Uji Matcha Monster Ice Cream ($12.90) is thinly sliced into beautiful ribbon folds. The Uji Matcha from Japan is used for ice shaving has a rich, bittersweet taste compared to artificial, sugary matcha. The googley eyes made from sugar adds to the cuteness of the dessert.

Toppings

For 12.90, the portion for the two toppings are quite small.

One of my toppings is the Rice Dumpling with Red Bean. Unfortunately, when I arrived, the rice dumplings were sold out. The azuki bean paste is thick, and the beans were starchy, making it a perfect match for the matcha.

The other topping is the Salted Cherry Jelly. The exterior is pretty. However, the jelly is surprisingly sour. The flower petals are also a bit bitter. Aesthetics aside, I would recommend skipping this topping.

Overall, I would give Roji Monster the following rating:

Food: 3.5/5

Space & Ambience: 4/5

Service: 4/5
